LADDER TYPES / STEP LADDERS

Everyday reach, without the stretch.

For shelves, light maintenance and short indoor jobs. Compare tread count, handholds and storage depth before choosing.

How to choose step ladders

Measure the task, then compare the highest permitted standing level. Overall frame height includes the handrail and is not the height you can stand at. A three-step model may be easier to store, while a taller model needs more floor space.

Steel versus aluminium

Steel steps can feel substantial and fold very thin, but carrying them upstairs may be tiring. Aluminium often reduces weight. Check the actual model weight rather than relying on “lightweight” in the title.

Check the open footprint

All feet need a firm, level surface and the ladder must open fully. Avoid sideways reaching and move the ladder instead. Tool trays are useful for small items, but do not replace a safe handhold.

A DIFFERENT SETTING

Comparing steps for the workplace

Look beyond the colour and overall shape. Compare the exact tread count, permitted standing level, open footprint and storage dimensions of the model you are considering.

This supplied image illustrates a workplace setting. It does not establish the ladder’s material, certification or suitability for a particular task.

Slim storage for everyday jobs

VonHaus 3 Step Steel Ladder

3 steps · steel · 150kg maximum load · 4cm folded thickness · 5.67kg listed weight

A practical starting point for household access where storage space matters. Its unusually slim folded profile is the main reason to shortlist it; the steel frame is less appealing if carrying weight is your priority.

Why consider it

Folds very flat; automatic locking mechanism; broad household usefulness.

Before you buy

Check that the permitted standing height reaches your job. Steel construction adds carrying weight.

What the feedback suggests

Amazon’s review summary highlights solid construction, useful household reach and slim storage. Weight attracts mixed opinions. Visible UK reviews also mention easy folding and a reassuring feel.

Compact steel alternative

SONGMICS 3-Step Folding Ladder

3 steps · steel · 150kg listed capacity · 4.5cm folded thickness · 5.7kg listed weight

A close alternative to the VonHaus for cupboards and narrow storage gaps. The automatic safety hook is useful, but compare the selected colour and size carefully because the listing includes several variants.

Why consider it

Slim folded profile; carry handle; rubber-capped feet.

Before you buy

The listed 5.7kg is worth considering if you move it between floors.

What the feedback suggests

The review summary and visible UK reviews repeatedly praise sturdy construction and easy storage. Several buyers find it heavier than expected.

Step ladders

Four-step household option

Home Vida 4 Step Ladder

4 steps · steel construction · 150kg listed maximum load · 47cm listed width

Worth comparing when a short kitchen step is insufficient. Four broad steps and a folding frame make it a straightforward household option, provided its standing limits and footprint suit the space.

Why consider it

Rubber-covered steps; folding frame; upper handhold.

Before you buy

Do not infer usable reach from the overall frame height. Consider the weight before carrying it upstairs.

What the feedback suggests

Amazon’s review summary emphasises stability, folding storage and usefulness around the house. Carrying weight divides buyers.

Keeping small tools close

BONTEC 4 Step Ladder with Tool Tray

4 steps · steel · 150kg listed capacity · 8.5kg · 7cm folded thickness · 96cm listed top-platform height

The detachable tray gives this model a clear purpose for short decorating and maintenance tasks. The broad pedals are attractive, but its 8.5kg weight makes frequent carrying a more important consideration.

Why consider it

Detachable tool tray; wide pedals; arrives assembled apart from the tray.

Before you buy

Heavier than compact three-step alternatives. A tray does not remove the need for safe hand contact.

What the feedback suggests

Amazon’s review summary highlights substantial steps, stability and the useful tool shelf. Weight receives mixed feedback.

Aluminium steps with a retractable handrail

XinSunho 5 Step Aluminium Ladder

5 steps · aluminium · 150kg listed capacity · 6.7kg · removable tray · 5.5cm listed folded depth

Combines a taller step format with an aluminium frame and retractable handrail. It suits buyers who want a tray without choosing the heaviest steel option, subject to checking the exact safe standing height.

Why consider it

Retractable handrail; removable tray; relatively slim storage.

Before you buy

Allow space for the listed 94cm open depth. Follow the handrail locking instructions.

What the feedback suggests

Amazon’s review summary highlights carrying convenience, tread width and folding storage. Feedback is positive about domestic DIY usefulness, but spans multiple sizes.

Extra handholds while climbing

Aidapt 4 Step Ladder with Dual Handrails

4 steps · steel · 150kg listed user limit · front rail 61cm above top step · closed size 170 × 53 × 10cm

The side rails are its distinguishing feature, giving more handholds during ascent and descent. Assess your own balance and mobility before choosing any ladder; handrails do not make climbing suitable for everyone.

Why consider it

Padded front and side rails; broad rubber treads; folds for storage.

Before you buy

Allow for assembly and a large folded frame. Buyers frequently mention carrying weight.

What the feedback suggests

Amazon’s review summary praises the handrails, sturdy feel and straightforward assembly. Heaviness is a recurring reservation.

Simple ready-assembled household steps

Amazon Basics 3-Step Folding Ladder

3 steps · steel · 150kg listed load · 6.7cm folded depth · EN 14183 testing stated by seller

A simple folding choice with published open and closed dimensions. Its clear domestic step-stool positioning makes comparison easier, though buyers should still check the label and instructions on arrival.

Why consider it

Delivered assembled; automatic lock; textured treads.

Before you buy

EN 14183 is the listing’s stated standard; do not describe this as an EN131 Professional ladder.

What the feedback suggests

Amazon’s review summary highlights a sturdy feel, easy opening and compact storage. The visible feedback sample is smaller than some established alternatives.

Step ladders

Low reach and narrow storage

KINGRACK 2 Step Aluminium Ladder

2 steps · aluminium · 150kg listed load · 4cm folded thickness · black variant

A low-reach option for buyers who value a slim frame and easier handling. Choose it for a task within its permitted standing height, rather than stretching from the top to compensate for a smaller ladder.

Why consider it

Slim folded frame; upper handhold; aluminium construction.

Before you buy

Two steps provide limited elevation. Listing feedback includes other sizes and materials.

What the feedback suggests

Amazon’s review summary repeatedly mentions easy carrying, a thin folded profile and convenient storage.

Step ladders

Slim four-step storage

SG Traders 4 Step Steel Ladder

4 steps · steel · 150kg listed load · 7.1kg · 4cm folded depth · open 46 × 82 × 131cm

An alternative four-step model with a notably shallow folded depth. The published 7.1kg weight helps you judge the trade-off between a steel frame and portability before ordering.

Why consider it

20cm listed pedal width; folding design; published open dimensions.

Before you buy

Check the lock engages fully and all feet sit level; a non-slip claim does not guarantee grip on every surface.

What the feedback suggests

Amazon’s review summary highlights sturdy construction, tread grip and household versatility.

↗Step ladders

A trade-style fibreglass option

The Workplace Depot 6 Tread Fibreglass Steps

6 treads · fibreglass · 150kg listed capacity · 1.86m listed overall height · integrated tool tray

A different proposition from compact kitchen steps: a larger fibreglass frame with a top tool tray. Check the permitted standing level and transport length. Fibreglass does not authorise work on live electrical systems.

Why consider it

Fibreglass construction; tool tray; seller states EN131 certification.

Before you buy

Confirm certification documents for the exact model. Overall height is not platform height or working reach.

What the feedback suggests

Amazon’s review summary highlights quality and manageable weight. It includes feedback on taller and shorter versions, so reported reach is not necessarily for this six-tread model.
