Is a ladder the right equipment?
HSE describes ladders as an option for suitable low-risk, short-duration work. Consider whether the task can be done from the ground or whether a platform or other access equipment is more appropriate.
Check the equipment
Inspect stiles, rungs, feet, platform, locks, braces and any fitted accessories. Check for damage, wear, loose components or contamination. Do not use a damaged ladder or repair it with improvised parts.
Check the location
The setup needs a firm, level base and suitable support. Keep the work area clear and consider doors, vehicles, other people and overhead hazards. Follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions.
Check the working position
Use the permitted standing levels, avoid overreaching, and maintain secure contact as instructed. Include yourself, tools and materials when checking the load limit. A good review score is not evidence that a risky setup is safe.
Read the full guidance
This is a brief reminder, not training. HSE’s guidance covers leaning ladders, stepladders, telescopic and combination models in more detail. Follow it alongside the exact manufacturer’s manual and any workplace risk assessment.
