How to choose a loft ladder

Start with the hatch and installation drawing, then choose the mechanism.

Ladder.co.uk editorial · 22 September 2026

Record four measurements

Measure finished floor to loft floor, clear hatch opening, available swing space below and storage clearance above. Insulation, joists, pipes and wiring can all affect the fit. Use the installation drawing for the exact model.

Choose the storage mechanism

Sliding loft ladders can be simple but need clear loft space. Folding ladders need a swing path. Telescopic installed systems can reduce the stored footprint, though their adjustment procedure deserves careful reading.

Plan installation and everyday use

Check the strength and suitability of the fixing points and frame. If alterations are needed, use a competent installer. Think about lighting and a secure handhold at the opening as well as the ladder itself.

A loft needs a safe landing

A ladder does not make insulation or ceiling plasterboard suitable to stand on. Plan the floor and storage route before carrying items up. Bulky loads can prevent secure hand contact, so consider how they will be moved separately.
